Commonwealth Internship Partners Program
Overview: In 2018, the Virginia General Assembly appropriated funding to the State Council of Higher Education to stimulate public colleges and universities to develop partnerships to provide innovative paid internship opportunities for their students. The General Assembly designated five goals: (i) support the strategic objectives of the Commonwealth of Virginia regarding designated workforce needs; (ii) support the strategic objectives of the Commonwealth regarding research and research commercialization in targeted sectors and clusters; (iii) support regional economic growth and diversification plans; (iv) enhance the job readiness and access of students; and (v) reduce the amount of educational loan debt that students will incur. All proposed internship programs are expected to be “innovative” for their institution and/or the partnering entities, incorporate best practices, contribute to or align with The Virginia Plan for Higher Education and support the Commonwealth’s objective to be the best-educated state by 2030.
