The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) views itself as a catalyst for economic and community transformation through research and education. The IALR has four strategic research centers, ranging from motorsports engineering to unmanned systems and robotics. From these centers will grow undergraduate and graduate programs in conjunction with IALR's academic partners: Virginia Tech, Averett University, and Danville Community College.

Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center

The Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center (SWVHEC) was established in 1991 to strengthen the economy of southwest Virginia through education and training of the current and future workforce. Through a unique partnership with 10 colleges and universities, the SWVHEC provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs and professional development courses primarily for adult learners.
Eastern Virginia Medical School

Eastern Virginia Medical School has provided education in medicine (MD), biomedical sciences (Ph.D. and master's degrees) and other health professions in southeastern Virginia since 1973. EVMS clinical faculty care for patients throughout Hampton Roads and conduct biomedical research in areas such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and infertility.
