RICHMOND — The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) will hold three public meetings next week.
1. Council Retreat (Monday, September 14 from 12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.): Council will hold a retreat related to updating SCHEV’s strategic plan, The Virginia Plan for Higher
Education. The purpose of the retreat is to coalesce around potential modifications to the existing six-year plan and to anticipate future needs for the Commonwealth.
2. Council of Presidents Meeting (Monday, September 14 from 3:15 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.): Agenda topics include remarks from Michale Rao, president, Virginia Commonwealth University;
and Makola Abdullah, president, Virginia State University. Other topics of discussion include the current state of higher education in Virginia, revisions to The Virginia Plan for Higher Education and SCHEV priorities.
3. Committee Meetings (Tuesday, September 15 from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.) & Full Council Meeting (Tuesday, September 15 from 10:15 a.m. – 12:55 p.m.): A closed
discussion on personnel matters will occur from 12:55 p.m. - 1:25 p.m. Council will adjourn at 1:30 p.m.
Mr. James Ryan, president, University of Virginia, will deliver remarks. In addition, Mr. Evan Feinman, Virginia’s Chief Broadband Advisor, will deliver a presentation on “Learning at a Distance: Commonwealth Connect and Virginia’s
Pivot to Online Education.”
Council will take action on certification of a new postsecondary institution (Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital School of Medical Imaging); provisional certification for two postsecondary institutions (American Sterling University and Virginia
Business College); and a modification to the SCHEV policy statement on distance education courses.
Council also will undertake a review of program announcements from public institutions. Additional discussions include the General Assembly special session outcomes; budget and policy considerations for the 2021 General Assembly Session; institutional
performance standards; and legislative studies.
