At the intersection of changing student demographics, increasing workforce demands and the rising cost of postsecondary education in Virginia is the need for collaboration and communication between sectors. An ongoing exchange of information and resources between K-12 and higher education will enable the Commonwealth to better serve all students and families and successfully navigate the opportunities our changing society presents. Credit for Exam Performance

Information on college credits, with links to each public four-year institution’s policies on transfer of credit can be found under Students: Preparing for College. While institutions have expanded credit awards for student performance on AP, IB, CIE and CLEP exams in recent years, final authority regarding credit awards still rests with the institutions. Students should contact their preferred institution(s) directly with any questions about credit awards and how they will be applied to a particular course of study.

Dual Enrollment

SCHEV, in consultation with each public institution of higher education, was charged by the legislature to establish a policy for granting undergraduate course credit to any entering student who has successfully completed a dual enrollment course.

Teacher Shortage

Governor McAuliffe convened a statewide Advisory Committee on Teacher Shortages (ACTS) in May 2017. Preliminary recommendations were released in October 2017. In December 2017, Governor McAuliffe announced Executive Directive 14 and budget proposals to address teacher shortages. Report information is being shared with Governor Northam.

Data, Resources and Tools

Landscape of College Access Resources in Virginia Interactive Maps
SCHEV commissioned a study to assess college access resources and the need for additional college readiness supports for students within school divisions across the state. In addition, six interactive maps displaying college access resources by division and other related factors, such as economic disadvantage and graduation and drop-out rates were created. Access to the source data for further use and/or review is also available. Data may be helpful when developing grant proposals, establishing benchmarks and/or assessing resources.

Postsecondary Enrollment Rates
The postsecondary enrollment rates for each high school and division are derived from National Student Clearinghouse data and posted to the VDOE website. Data can be used to draw benchmarks for improvement and to assess growth. The postsecondary enrollment rate for the state is 72%. Review the data and see how your school/division(s) stack up.

Postsecondary Enrollment Data by Locality
Data specific to postsecondary enrollment by locality can be found under Research and Statistics on the SCHEV website. Of specific interest may be the Admissions by Student Level and Student Locality report and others listed under Data for Localities.

Multiple Measures for Course Placement
The implementation of Multiple Measures for more accurate placement into college level Math and English courses supports the Virginia Community College System's (VCCS) holistic Guided Pathways reforms. Students now have a variety of ways to demonstrate readiness for college-level coursework.

A colorful map of Virginia's public and private non-profit higher education institutions is now available for download. The 8 1/2 x 11 front and back handout can serve as a visual aid when sharing the great number of postsecondary options available to students in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

FAFSA Completion Reports by High School
These reports provide Virginia FAFSA submission data by school division and school. It also includes the percentage of seniors with submitted applications. The number of applications submitted is received from U.S. Department of Education data. The percentage is calculated using the number of students in grade 12 as noted on the VDOE fall membership report.

February is Financial Aid Awareness Month
During February’s Financial Aid Awareness Month, The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia shares multiple ways to pay for college, including some free options. Find information about the primary sources for student aid and downloadable fliers or social media cards to share with students and families.
